This work plays with layers of meaning present in the word sound and questions of madness or sanity regarding human impact on natural environments. The installation traversed the entire site of Eden Gardens and highlighted the functional processes of the recycled water system. From capturing rain and runoff from irrigation, water is directed through reed beds, activating all the ponds and fountains and then onward through exposure to UV, soil filtration and via phytoremediation of plants along a natural watercourse to the reservoir where it is held for reuse.
The artwork was created in response to the site, following the flow of water with a ‘line’ of bamboo stakes, highlighted with purple denoting recycled water, At various locations ‘listening posts’ directed attention to consider the function, connectivity and complexity present within the natural processes.
The installation included sound files at the pool, which was the focus point of the work, combining conversations with workshop participants, employees and recordings from the site of frogs, birds and water. The sound and lighting elements were powered by solar panels.
Leanne held workshops with local high school students who participated during installation by investigating the water cycle on the site and conceptual themes of the work, as well as citizen science activities and assisting with sound recording.
