Aqua Alta
Aqua Alta, the high tide in Venice, creeps up the walls as the buildings slowly sink into the mud and become more susceptible to higher sea levels. Climate variations add drama with torrential rains and storm surge.
Over a month while in residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica and immersed in the flows of the city catalysed these works. Lost in the tangled streets, water crossings, saturated colour seeping into consciousness, dark nights on the lagoon, tossing lights, phosphorescent wakes, and so many incessant movements of people navigating transits.
The work became a solo exhibition, brought together with a series of events, at Mary Place Gallery, Paddington in early 2012 with many now in private collections.
