This small installation for an exhibition of southern Sydney artists was an experiment in activating interaction with the audience. Encasing woven forms from materials sourced in swamps and wetlands was a skin of pipes and plumbing. People were encouraged to remove the ties holding sections of the outer shell together to reveal the natural hidden form and complexity. Inviting conversation while participating in the transformation of the work during the opening night, dialogue revolved around identification of both mediated waterway systems and natural wetlands still remnant in the area. Even the Mayor of Sutherland Shire was drawn into the activity and discussion of why we prioritise industrial methods for water purification over natural ecosystem function.
